A Winter Wonderland: Exploring Toronto’s Skate Lending Library

In mid-February, I visited my biggest customer, the City of Toronto, right after a record snowfall. What I found was a city that doesn’t just endure winter—it celebrates it. The Skate Lending Library, a standout initiative in partnership with Desjardins Financial Group, makes skating accessible and fun for everyone. From free ice skates to helmets and skate aids at over 40 locations, this program invites Torontonians of all skill levels to hit the ice.
What Is the Skate Lending Library?
The Skate Lending Library is a game-changer for Toronto’s winter recreation. This innovative program offers free rentals of skates, helmets, and skate aids across the city. Whether you’re a first-timer or a pro, it ensures everyone can enjoy skating without the cost of gear holding them back. It’s a brilliant way to embrace winter and promote inclusivity.
A Community-Driven Vision
During my visit, I met Danielle from the City of Toronto, who shared the inspiring story behind the Skate Lending Library. She explained how it started and how it’s grown, touching thousands of lives. As someone connected to this initiative, I felt immense pride hearing about its impact—bringing joy and activity to the community, one skate at a time.
Iconic Rinks in Action
My tour took me to two of Toronto’s most beloved outdoor rinks: Nathan Phillips Square and the Barbara Ann Scott / College Park Skate Trail. Nestled in the city’s heart, both were alive with skaters of all ages, undeterred by the recent snow. Seeing kids and adults glide across the ice was a heartwarming reminder of skating’s universal appeal.
Toronto’s Winter Resilience
What stood out most was Toronto’s dedication to keeping these rinks ready. Despite heavy snowfall, the city cleared the ice efficiently, ensuring skaters could enjoy safe, smooth surfaces. This commitment to maintaining recreational spaces reflects Toronto’s focus on active, healthy living—even in the toughest winter conditions.
The Power of Inclusive Fun
Reflecting on my visit, I’m struck by the Skate Lending Library’s broader impact. By removing barriers like equipment costs, it fosters a more inclusive, vibrant community. It’s proof that with the right initiatives, cities can turn winter into a season of joy and connection for all.
